Donate Diabetic Supplies
At DSR we acquire excess and unused diabetic supplies so that we can get them to people who don't have insurance. If you have excess supplies stuffed in a box in your closet, don't let them expire and go to waste.
There are many people whose health, and even their lives, are at risk because they can not afford the tools to monitor their blood sugar. Anyone who lives with diabetes knows how dangerous this can be.
When you send your excess supplies to DSR, you will be helping some person, and maybe several people, re-gain control of their health.
By recycling, you may even save someone's life.
Items we accept as donations:
Of course, non-expired test strips are needed most. Any brand.
Yes, we accept lancets, but, to be honest, most of the lancets we receive do not end up in the hands of our customers. The reason is that EVERYONE has too many lancets because no one changes their lancet with with every test. Come on, admit it. That's why YOU have extra lancets, isn't it? Your doc prescribed as many lancets as test strips, but you use the same lancets many times. Everyone does that.
When someone buys test strips from us, we will send them a box of lancets for free, if they want them. But, very few people take us up on that offer.
We have so many lancets that we have started giving them to artists who create art out of recycled materials.
So, send lancets with the idea that they may end up as art somewhere, but it is unlikely that they will be given to someone with diabetes.
When someone buys test strips from us, we will give them a box of syringes if they want it. Again, few people take us up on the offer. Unlike lancets, though, we have a place to send syringes. Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless (http://abqhch.org/) takes most of our syringes.
Yes, we accept glucometers, and we prefer they are in the original box, but we can often find homes for used ones. Right now, we need Aviva, OneTouch, and Freestyle meters especially.
Any other non-prescription diabetic supplies
Some times people send us items like alcohol swabs and glucose tabs. We give most of these consumables to AHCH, and they are happy to have them. If you have items that can be used by a general population, not necessarily people with diabetes, we will forward them to AHCH. Note: These must be unopened, non-prescription items. No medicines, please.
What we can't accept
We are not licensed to dispense any prescription medications. If you send them to us, we will safely dispose of them.
Other prescription items
Before you send us any other items like infusion sets or insulin reservoirs, please check that you do NOT see "RX only" on the product or package. Besides, most people who use insulin pumps and related supplies already have insurance. Our clients do not have insurance and would not have a pump.
We have recently discovered two things. First, pump reservoirs are NOT prescription items, so we can accept them. Right now, we are looking for 1.8 ml reservoirs for Medtronic pumps.
Please send insulin to Insulin For Life. They send these supplies to children living with diabetes in Third World countries. What they need more than anything else, and what DSR does not handle, is insulin.
For instructions on how to pack and ship the insulin to IFL, go to their web site at:
We will send you a tax-deductible letter for your donation if you include your name and address INSIDE the package. If you want an itemized list of what you donated, please fill out the form. Otherwise, your letter will just say, "Diabetic Supplies." Be sure to click on the Send button at the bottom of the form.
Please pack your donated supplies in a box that will keep the supplies from being crushed or broken.
